Flipping the card

I woke up ridiculously early today. It was a bright, fresh, breezy day so I took myself off on a brisk walk to the café.

On my return, there were no lucky marbles on the road for me. But there was a card, face down. Just one.

Oh yeah, I thought. What are the odds that it is a Joker or the Queen of Diamonds? Well, I know the answer to both those questions, and so do you.

Someone has lost their Nine of Clubs

The joke is on me, for I have no idea what the nine or the clubs signifies. But it did bring to mind a small slice of my misspent youth scouring second-hand bookshops and reading a book called The Dice Man in which I first encountered the word catatonic.
