  1. You are right about people writing crosswise: I have some letters written by my grandmother to her sons at boarding school in the 1930s, and she often did this. She only ever used one sheet of notepaper, and if that wasn’t enough would continue by writing sideways in the space at the top of the first page, the ends of the lines encroaching on what she’d already written. It’s mostly legible, but can sometimes take a while to decipher. I had assumed it was to save paper rather than postage.

    1. It was probably to save both, although I do remember that one more sheet of paper normally meant buying another stamp, and, depending on the weight of the paper, could almost double the cost of postage.
